There are many people in Philadelphia who are charged with DUIs each month. In order to address this issue, the Pennsylvania legislature has enacted many laws to punish those who drive under the influence. The police are also trained to determine if a driver is drunk and make a DUI arrest based on this assessment. There are many indications that police look for when determining whether a driver is drunk. If the person is swerving in traffic or is involved in an accident, police will generally conduct tests to determine whether alcohol is a factor.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDot) released a new report, which states that alcohol related car accidents are down. The PennDot report indicates that in 2012 there were 12,000 DUI crashes in Pennsylvania. This is down from 2002 when there were over 15,000 alcohol related car accidents. In addition, the number of people killed in alcohol related accidents is down to 404 in 2012, compared to 542 people killed in 2002.
